Samiya Arzoo, the wife of Pakistani cricketer Hasan Ali who dropped an important catch in Thursday’s T20 World Cup semis match with New Zealand, has become the target of trolls on the internet. Both Arzoo and her husband are facing merciless abuse, on grounds of both their marriage and religion, against the context of Pakistan’s match loss.
Arzoo hails from Haryana, India, and tied the knot with Ali in 2019 in Dubai, where she presently works. She is trained as an aeronautical engineer. They became parents to a daughter earlier this year. Arzoo’s father formerly held a position with the Haryana government, according to reports.
A section of social media users is alleging the New Zealand-Pakistan match, which was the deciding game for whether the latter team would play the finals, was “fixed” citing Arzoo’s identity as an Indian. Memes and attacks are flooding Twitter, where Arzoo and Ali are suggestively being blamed for the loss.
